[edit] What is eLearning?

[edit] What's in a name?

So what is elearning? There are many ways to spell it, let alone define it. Is it e-learning, eLearning or Elearning? For the sake of consistency within this document the following convention, unless a different spelling is quoted from a separate source, is used:

  • elearning – the non capitalised form;
  • eLearning – the capitalised form.

[edit] Terminology

There are a mix of inter-related terms in use, including elearning, mobile learning, distance learning and flexible learning. In Online Services we prefer to use the phrase flexible distributed learning. Flexible Distributed Learning is a broad term for different learning types - it might be a combination of distance learning, eLearning, blended learning etc. It is simply a mixture of teaching and learning methods.

[edit] eLearning

So what is eLearning? It is defined by JISC (2005) as learning facilitated and supported by the use of information and communications technology, eLearning may involve the use of some or all, of the following technologies:

  • Desktop and laptop computers
  • Software, including assistive software
  • Interactive whiteboards
  • Digital cameras
  • Mobile and wireless tools, including mobile phones
  • Electronic communication tools, including email, discussion boards, chat facilities and video conferencing
  • Virtual Learning Environments (VLEs)
  • Learning activity management systems

eLearning can cover a spectrum of activites from supporting learning, to blended learning (the combination of traditional and eLearning practices), to learning that is delivered entirely online. Whatever the technology, however, learning is the vital element. eLearning is no longer simply associated with distance or remote learning, but forms part of a conscious choice of the best and most appropriate ways of promoting effective learning.
